Pussy Galore - Groovy Hate Fuck
(Shove)
"Deconstructionist, willfully offensive, hyper-aggressive thrash-rock band, went on to spawn a who's-who of '90s indie rock bands." - Allmusic
THE NAME: Pussy Galore. As far as I'm concerned, NOT taken from the character in the "Dr. No" movie, but from a sign outside a sex shop! Ideally, the verb "Fucking" should be inserted between the words Pussy and Galore...
THE EP COVER: A black & white photo. Four extras from "The Warriors" movie (3 men, 1 woman) standing, incongruously, in a field. The (glorious) band logo screams out above their heads...
THE EP TITLE: Groovy Hate Fuck. Three inflammatory words. Make up yr own meaning...
TRACK TITLES: One word of each song title is super-bolded so that, at first glance, all you can read is: "Pussy Jew Cunt Die Meat Kill Asshole." Provocative as fuck...
PERSONNEL / INSTRUMENTS:
Vocals: Jon Spencer
Guitars: Neil Hagerty, Julia Cafritz, Jon Spencer
Drums: John Hammill
Metal (!): Jon Spencer, Tom Raferty, John Hammill, Rick Hall
Note the lack of bass and the excess of metal...
THE BACK STORY: Formed in 1985 in Washington D.C., “Groovy Hate Fuck” (1986) is the second release from the band (following the “Feel Good About Your Body” 7”) and is, perhaps, the essence of the bands sound. If the term ‘noise-rock’ means anything, then Pussy Galore define it...
THE REVIEW: Pussy Galore proudly embraced their no-fi godawful-racket for the hell of it. Their agenda: to annoy anyone within earshot. Aggressively. Taking cues from primitive 60’s garage punk, gutbucket blues combos and anyone who ever stuck a middle-finger up to ‘the Man’, the band created something truly unique both sonically and attitudinally. This records rattle outta the speakers with true malevolence and forces itself inside your head with a barrage of banging clanging metal, primal guitar riffs, shouted vocals and offensive singalong outbursts. Personally, I think there’s something as funny as fuck about their band-falling-down-the-stairs approach. I always have a good laugh when I listen to them. Not at ‘em, but with them. These bumpkins KNEW what they were doing, and did it to spectacular effect!
This is an essential record, if you're man (or woman) enough to stand it, and it’s the first record in their discography that you need. Then you’ll need all the others! Pussy Fuckin’ Galore are MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE BAND, and always will be. God bless ‘em. (Lee)
