Piri - Voces Querem Mate?
(Far Out Recordings)

The stunning, Brazilian psychedelic and pastoral folk LP Voces Querem Mate was shown the light of day thanks to the forward thinking efforts of producer Roberto Quartin. After selling the rights of his former label Forma to Polydor, Quartin launched a new label bearing his name and focusing on progressive jazz and folk sounds from Brazil.
Piry Reis, or Piri, was one of his findings and Quartin gave him the license to put together this stunning work of Tropicalia and progressive MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira) in 1970. Free-spirited, loose and heavy on flute and latin percussion, Piri’s voice soars atop off kilter rhythms and lush acoustics. “Lagrimas” is a standout with heavily reverberated vocals and cosmic flute passages. Opener “Reza Brava” sets the standard with a celebratory, groovy rhythm that is simultaneously catchy and psychedelic and from there on, things stay trippy and joyous.
Voces Querem Mate is a winner for anyone looking for forward thinking Brazilian sounds. This Far Out release is the first ever reissue of this scare rarity and has been officially licensed and remastered from the original 2” master tapes. (Dom)
