The Maytals - From The Roots
(Get On Down)
In my mind, The Maytals are one of the great, if not greatest, ska and reggae vocal groups in Jamaica. Led by Toots Hibbert, their harmonies were impeccable and their original songs were always filled with hooks.
From The Roots comes during the crucial transitional time in Jamaica when the rhythms were slowing down from the constantly upbeat ska, to the more groove-oriented rocksteady. They were quite popular during their ska days but From The Roots shows how well they took to rocksteady. Originally released on the always great Trojan Records and produced by Byron Lee in 1970, From The Roots showcases Hibbert prominently with vocalists Henry "Raleigh" Gordon and Nathaniel "Jerry" Mathias beautifully filling out the spiritual harmonies.
Included here are some of the Maytals classics from that era: “Loving Spirit”, “Revival Reggae” “One Eye Enos” and even their version “Give Peace A Chance”. Essential rocksteady! (Dom)
