Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown
(Abraham)
Mixing mastermind Osbourne Ruddock, aka King Tubby, was a genius and a pioneer in the art of studio mixing and dub styling. A true mixologist. His meeting with melodica maestro Augustus Pablo in 1976, King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown, is the crown jewel in Jamaican dub.
If there’s one dub LP to own, this is probably it.
King Tubby is at the height of his powers mixing warm and druggy reverberations atop Pablo’s trancelike melodica. Two of Jacob Miller’s finest cuts, “Baby I Love You So” and “Each One Teach One”, are amongst the set and Tubby takes great care easing his way in and out with a brand of mystic, yet somewhat darkened energy.
One of the most interesting aspects about King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown is the lovely Eastern influence that emanates within the grooves. You can hear it in Pablo’s melodica as he navigates minor-key melodies which are masterfully manipulated by King Tubby throughout.
Both artists are at the absolute top of their game here. No doubt ESSENTIAL (Dom)
