Grandaddy - Last Place
(30th Century)
Who would’ve thought there would be another Grandaddy LP? Following 2006’s largely solo affair, Just Like the Fambly Cat, Jason Lytle worked on proper solo records, did a one-off rocker with Earlimart (Admiral Radley) and traversed to Montana to incubate ideas and songs. After a long hiatus, in 2012 a series of live Grandaddy shows with the entire original lineup assured that that band had not been forgotten. Last Place is familiar and welcoming while keeping the best hallmarks of the bands’ tendencies nicely in place - sarcastic and witty tales about technology clashing with nature filtered through big choruses, sparkly keyboards and crunched up guitars. Who can’t love a song called “That’s What You Get For Getting’ Out of Bed” when that idea is paired with lazer-like synths, fat acoustic strums and a catchy minor-key? So glad to have Grandaddy back on the shelves. (Dom)
