Binker And Moses – Alive In The East?
(Gearbox)
I can't tell you how thrilling it is for me to hear a contemporary jazz band impress and captivate me as much as these Binker and Moses records have. The 3rd full LP of material from the titular band leaders, saxophonist Binker Golding and drummer Moses Boyd, materializes in the form of a stunning new live recording from London. The record opens up just tremendously with a dazzling drum solo, before bubbling and blooming into an incredibly joyous swath of melody, groove and infectious rhythms. We got some beautiful splashes of harp playing too by Tori Handsly, and once again the veteran sax man Evan Parker makes an appearance. As usual, the freedom of expression is expertly held down and guided by a strong attention to rhythm, giving all the instruments room to breath. Another thing that I just realized while typing this is that there is no bass player in the band! I never even noticed that before, just horns, harp and drums! The amount of attention this record snaps out of me is just wonderful. It's not very often I tune out while listening to this, please give this your attention as well. (Seven)
